C-TAR is a course aimed at and developed by construction professionals in liaison with health care professionals with an extensive pre hospital background. It has been developed by research into the types of incidents that the construction industry has to deal with on a daily basis. 4 day first aid at work is the standard that we in construction industry are told we have to train to. This is the same standard and syllabus that a shop assistant, librarian or teacher also have to achieve. Unfortunately we are faced with far different scenarios on site, particularly if the site is isolated or undertaking specialist operations such as working at height.

C-TAR is a practical, hands on course, with short punchy lectures and skill stations used to teach the specialist skills. Our courses at Trauma and Resuscitation Services differ from other training providers who tend to use the same lecturer for the full 3 days. We use an expert in their particular field for each subject; this may be a Doctor or other healthcare professional, or indeed an expert from industry. For a course such as C-TAR it is not uncommon to have as many as six different specialist instructors per day!

The syllabus for C-TAR covers all types of incidents that the industry throws at us. We can confidently make this statement as we have spent over 18 months researching the accident statistics in collaboration with safety engineers and Site Agents / Managers from the industry. To make sure we cover all of the scenarios, our syllabus includes:

  • Basic life support (to Resuscitation Council approved levels)
  • Suspension trauma ( you are responsible for rescue, new W.A.H Regulations )
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Administration of Entonox
  • Basic and advanced airway techniques
  • Circulation preservation
  • Packaging and evacuation
  • Defibrillation
  • Advanced immobilisation techniques
  • C-spine immobilisation techniques
  • Site based practice scenarios
  • Scene safety
  • Kinematics
  • Paediatrics (children love trespassing on construction sites!)
  • Extremity trauma
  • Falls from height
  • Crush injuries
  • Burns
  • Etc, Etc, Etc

If your construction site has a particular specialist operation or risk (such as confined spaces or working over water, working at height, high pressure water jetting, or specialist chemicals; we can help. Before each course takes place, your site will be visited by a construction professional, and a feasibility study of your core, and any specialist needs assessed. The core modules in C-TAR will then be enhanced by any special requirements you have.

Our courses are proven in industry, and indeed, many of our clients have won safety awards for a pro active approach towards safety. We cannot prevent accidents; however we can prevent an over 3 day reportable turning into a fatality. (Insurers tell us that a fatality could cost in excess of £1m when compensation and bad publicity etc, etc are taken into account)

No price can ever be put on safety, and it should be a company’s goal to send home its workforce in at least the same condition that they reported fro work if not better!

Many tenders are won on Safety and quality rather than price in these modern times, and our clients have proved this time and again. Even the HSE’s latest document is saying what we have been preaching for years, “don’t rely on the Fire Brigade to help you “if you have special circumstances, you have to make special arrangements. So why not let our industry proven courses help you achieve these special arrangements.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any more information about the C-TAR course.
